Frame Ties With Drip
Stainless Frame Ties with Drip
Frame ties do two critical jobs:
They secure the brickwork to a steel or concrete frame, and they stop wind-driven rain reaching the inner leaf.
The drip feature on these ties breaks capillary action, forcing water to drop harmlessly back into the cavity—exactly what NHBC and PD 6697 expect from a modern façade.
Which tie fits your cavity?
Typical application | Go-to tie | Cavity range | Link* |
---|---|---|---|
Brickwork to SFS studs | Vista VE7D series | 50–250 mm | VE7D range |
Heavy wind loads / movement slot | Ancon SDV | 75–250 mm | SDV 150 mm |
General purpose brick-to-concrete | Ancon SDB | 100–275 mm | SDB 200 mm |

Key features
Grade 304 stainless (316 optional) – 60-year design life and no bi-metallic staining.
Pressed drip or deep swage sheds water before it can reach the inner leaf.
Movement slots (SDV) absorb ±23 mm differential between brickwork and frame.
Meets PD 6697 Table 12 density – 2.5 ties/m² plus extras at openings.
Pair with red insulation-retaining clips to keep boards tight to the inner leaf.
Installation essentials
Density – 2.5 ties/m² (450 mm vertical × 900 mm horizontal).
Embedment – 50 ± 10 mm into the bed joint; seat the drip midway in the cavity.
Fixing to frame – use stainless concrete & masonry screws through the tie’s 6.5 mm hole or slot.
Compression sleeves – over 150 mm cavities add a compression sleeve to stop tie whip.
Never bed the drip into mortar—its job is to stay free so water falls away.
Frequently asked questions
Why choose a tie with a drip?
The drip interrupts water tracking along the steel into the inner skin, protecting insulation and finishes—essential on rainscreen or fair-face brick façades.
Can I mix stainless ties with galvanised screws?
Avoid mixing grades externally; match stainless to stainless to prevent staining.
Are VE7D ties suitable above 18 m?
Yes—stainless ties and fixings meet Regulation 7(2) for non-combustible components in external walls.
How many boxes do I need?
Wall area × 2.5 ÷ 250 (ties/box). Example: 120 m² façade → 1 200 ties → 5 boxes.
