Ladder Reinforcement Mesh
The simplest way to keep masonry crack-free
Shrinkage, thermal swing or minor settlement can open unsightly fissures above window heads and in long panels. Ladder reinforcement—two longitudinal wires joined by crisp cross-rungs—spreads those stresses so cracks never appear. Because it sits centrally in the 10 mm mortar bed it won’t interfere with coursing, and it can be cut with snips in seconds.

Where & how to use ladder reinforcement
Above openings – run two continuous courses starting one brick length past each jamb.
Long panels – every 3rd course in brickwork panels over 4 m long or 12 m² in area.
Changes in thickness – wherever a half-brick return meets a full-brick wall.
Parapets & copings – top three courses for extra robustness.
Installation tips
Bed centrally – 50 % mortar cover top & bottom.
Lap 225 mm (one mesh module) at ends.
Stagger laps on each leaf – never align joints through the cavity.
Use wall ties with 5 mm stand-off clips to avoid bi-metallic contact when mixing galvanised mesh and stainless ties.
FAQs
Galvanised or stainless—how do I decide?
Galv suits sheltered internal or below-DPC work; anything exposed to weather or aggressive atmospheres should be stainless. Coastal sites within 5 km of the sea must be stainless under PD 6697.
Can I bend ladder mesh round corners?
Yes—snip the cross-wires, lap 225 mm and keep the longitudinal wires continuous round the turn.
Does ladder mesh replace movement joints?
No; it controls cracking between movement joints. Keep MJ spacing as per your structural engineer and bridge them with movement ties.
How many rolls for a 200 m² block wall (140 mm)?
Every 3rd course ≈ 0.83 m mesh per m² → 166 m total → 6 rolls of 27 m stainless 175 mm wide.
