Timber Frame Ties

Timber-Frame Wall Ties

Secure a lightweight frame to a masonry skin—without cold bridging
Modern timber construction relies on cavity ties that restrain brickwork yet flex with timber’s natural movement. Our timber-frame ties use wide fixing plates, drips and compression sleeves to transfer lateral load while preventing water tracking or thermal bridges.  Every tie on this page is independently tested to BS EN 845-1 and meets the tie density rules of PD 6697.

For cavities > 175 mm add a stainless compression sleeve to stop mid-span deflection.

Key advantages

  • Wide fixing plates grip timber studs without crushing fibres.

  • Deep drips shed driven rain before it bridges to timber.

  • Helical options (TIM6) screw directly into timber—no nail plates needed.

  • 304 & 316 stainless shrug off coastal and Class 4 exposure zones.

  • Supplied with red insulation-retaining clips to keep batts snug to sheathing.

Installation best practice

  1. Density—2.5 ties/m² on a 450 mm × 900 mm grid; double around openings.

  2. Embedment—50 ± 10 mm in brick skin; seat the drip at mid-cavity.

  3. Fixing to timber—use 35 mm sheradised ring-shank nails or drive helical ties with the Ancon TIM6 tool.

  4. Movement joints—insert stainless movement ties at vertical joints every 10 – 12 m.

  5. Fire-stop perimeter—link ties to ARC TCB Timber cavity barriers to maintain fire integrity.

FAQs

Galvanised or stainless?
External timber-frame always demands stainless (PD 6697); galvanised is limited to sheltered internal walls.

What about differential movement?
Timber shrinks ~3 mm per storey; slot ties (Ancon SDV) or helical TIM6 absorb that without stressing mortar.

Edge distance on studs?
Minimum 25 mm from stud edge; avoid nailing into end grain.

Next-day delivery caveats?
