Three product families dominate the UK bed-joint reinforcement market: traditional ladder reinforcement, Vista V44 coil mesh, and Bekaert Murfor Compact. Ladder reinforcement: the structural-engineer's default
Ladder reinforcement consists of two parallel longitudinal wires welded to perpendicular cross-rungs, producing the characteristic ladder appearance. The two longitudinal wires sit just inside the inner and outer faces of the wall, with the cross-rungs locating them centrally in the bed. Under tension, the longitudinal wires carry the load directly along the panel — a simple, well-understood mechanism that's easy to calculate to Eurocode 6.
Spechunter stocks ladder reinforcement in two ranges. The Ancon AMR/S/D3.0/W100 is a 3 mm stainless steel product for 140 mm blockwork inner leaves; the Ancon AMR/S/D3.0/W60 is the 100 mm brickwork equivalent. Both are supplied in 2.7 m bundles of 20 (54 m total per bundle), and both are manufactured to BS EN 845-3 Annex A geometry. The own-brand Spechunter ladder range covers the same widths in galvanised steel at a lower price point — the right choice for inner-leaf applications where stainless is overkill.
When to specify ladder reinforcement:
- The structural engineer has calculated tensile capacity and named ladder reinforcement by section size.
- The wall is long (over 6 m between movement joints) or panels exceed normal aspect ratios.
- The project specification calls for Ancon by name (common on consultant-specified residential and commercial schemes).
- You need designed reinforcement above heavy lintels or below sills carrying significant load.
- The wall is exposed to high wind suction (coastal, high-rise) and the engineer has specified stainless reinforcement.
Limitations: Ladder reinforcement is supplied in straight 2.7 m lengths rather than rolls, which means more laps per panel and more on-site cutting waste. The two-wire geometry also produces a slightly thicker profile than Murfor Compact, which can be noticeable in a tight 10 mm joint with full-fill mortar.
Vista V44 coil mesh: the crack-control workhorse
Vista V44 coil mesh — sometimes called expanded metal lath — is produced by slitting a steel sheet and stretching it into a continuous diamond pattern. The result is a flexible strip that unrolls easily, cuts with snips, and embeds flat into the mortar bed. Because the steel is distributed across the full width of the strip rather than concentrated in two longitudinal wires, coil mesh works best as a crack-control product rather than a designed tensile element.
Spechunter stocks Vista V44 in four widths to match common course depths. The 65 mm galvanised roll suits half-brick decorative work; the 65 mm stainless is the external equivalent. For wider courses, the 112 mm stainless and 175 mm stainless rolls cover blockwork inner leaves and wider feature courses. All Vista V44 products come on 20 m rolls — typically enough for two or three full panels per roll without a lap.
When to specify Vista V44:
- General shrinkage and thermal crack control in residential and commercial panels under 6 m long.
- Half-brick external walls, garden walls, and boundary walls where designed reinforcement isn't required.
- Above and below openings in unreinforced masonry where the engineer hasn't specified ladder reinforcement.
- Decorative brickwork, arches, and curved walls where the flexibility of an expanded mesh allows it to follow the wall geometry.
- Retrofit and repair work where ease of cutting and bedding matters more than absolute capacity.
Limitations: Coil mesh is not a substitute for designed reinforcement on long or heavily loaded walls. It works in tension but distributes load less efficiently than two parallel wires — for serious tensile demand, the engineer will specify ladder reinforcement or Murfor Compact.
Murfor Compact: the speed-and-flush specialist
Murfor Compact is Bekaert's proprietary pre-engineered mesh: two parallel longitudinal wires joined by a continuous waveform of cross-wires, all flattened into a profile thin enough to slip into any standard 10 mm bed joint without raising the course. The geometry combines the tensile reliability of ladder reinforcement with the installation speed of coil mesh — at a price premium over both.
Spechunter stocks Murfor Compact in two finish series. The I-series is galvanised, for internal and sheltered exposure — see the I-50 (50 mm) and the I-100 (100 mm) rolls. The E-series is austenitic stainless steel for external and aggressive exposure: the narrower E-35 (35 mm) is the specifier's pick for half-brick external skins, and the E-70 (70 mm) covers 100 mm brickwork. All Murfor Compact rolls are 30 m — the longest in the Spechunter range, which means fewer laps per panel.
When to specify Murfor Compact:
- High-output sites where installation speed matters and bricklayers can unroll-cut-embed rather than cut-to-length.
- Parapets and external walls where a flat profile keeps the joint flush and the wall face clean.
- Multi-storey housing schemes where consistency of detail across many walls is more important than absolute lowest material cost.
- Specifications that name Murfor Compact directly — the architect or engineer is calling it out by name on the drawings.
- Stainless applications where the longer roll length reduces lap count and tightens the detail.
Limitations: The proprietary geometry means a price premium over commodity ladder and coil mesh. If the engineer hasn't specified Murfor by name and the project budget is tight, ladder reinforcement or Vista V44 will often do the same job for less.
Cost vs value — how to think about the price difference
Across like-for-like widths and materials, the three product families typically rank by price as follows: Vista V44 coil mesh is the entry point, own-brand ladder reinforcement sits in the middle, and Murfor Compact carries a premium for the proprietary geometry and longer roll lengths. Within each family, the galvanised variant is roughly half the cost of the stainless equivalent.
On a typical residential extension panel, the bed-joint reinforcement budget is a small fraction of the masonry package — the difference between the cheapest and most expensive option is usually under £50 per panel. That makes "right product for the job" the more important question than "cheapest option," particularly on the external leaf where corrosion-resistance choice has long-term consequences. - Has the structural engineer specified the product by name? Use what they've specified. Brand name and section size are not interchangeable on a designed structure.
- Is the wall short (under 6 m), unreinforced, and intended for general crack control only? Vista V44 coil mesh is the most economical choice.
- Is the wall long, externally exposed, or under designed tensile load? Specify ladder reinforcement (Ancon AMR or own-brand) sized to the engineer's calculation, with stainless on the external leaf.
