Type 3 Wall Ties

The Everyday Choice for Low-Rise Housing

Type 3 wall ties slot neatly between light-duty Type 4 and general-purpose Type 2. They’re rated for ≤2.5-storey housing or sheltered urban sites where wind loads are modest yet a little extra capacity over Type 4 is welcome. The classic double-triangle profile keeps the tie rigid under compression, and the pressed drip stops rainwater tracking to the inner leaf.

Why builders still love double-triangle ties

  • 0.55 kN tension / compression—ideal for houses and small apartment blocks.

  • Tangle-free shape—pull one tie from the bucket, no knots to undo.

  • Pressed drip centred in the cavity prevents moisture bridging.

  • Grade 304 stainless as standard; 316 available to order for coastal sites.

  • 2.5 ties/m² density (450 × 900 mm grid) keeps calculations simple.

Clip on our red insulation-retaining clips to keep partial-fill batts flush against the inner leaf.

Installation checklist

  1. Spacing: 450 mm vertical × 900 mm horizontal (2.5/m²); double within 150 mm of openings and movement joints.

  2. Embedment: 50 ± 10 mm in each leaf. Seat the drip mid-cavity.

  3. Mortar class: M4 (1:1:6) or stronger to satisfy PD 6697 pull-out values.

  4. Cavities > 150 mm: slip a stainless compression sleeve over the tie to stop whip.

  5. Movement joints: every 10 – 12 m, introduce stainless movement ties instead of standard ties.

Frequently asked questions

When should I specify Type 3 over Type 4?
Whenever the building is > 10 m tall or located in a “moderate” wind zone (BS 6399 / Eurocode C2). Type 4 covers single- or two-storey dwellings in sheltered suburbs only.

Can I mix Vista and Ancon double-triangle ties on one elevation?
Yes, provided they all meet Type 3 classification and you keep the density at 2.5/m².

Are galvanised Type 3 ties acceptable above DPC?
No—external masonry must be stainless under PD 6697.
