Timber Frame Fixings

Timber Frame Fixings

Timber frame construction depends on dependable mechanical fixings — for connecting wall ties to studs, securing membranes to frames, and fastening sheathing and battens through to the structural timber. The right fixing makes the difference between a frame that performs as designed and one that suffers from movement, racking, or premature failure.

Spechunter stocks Vista stainless steel ring shank nails — a workhorse fixing for timber-frame applications across UK residential and commercial construction.

What's in the Range

Vista Stainless Steel 3.35 x 50mm Ring Shank Nails (Box of 250) — 50mm length stainless steel nails with ring-shank thread for superior pull-out resistance. Suitable for fixing through timber sheathing into studs, securing wall ties to timber frames, and any application where corrosion resistance and high pull-out strength are both required.

Why Ring-Shank vs Smooth Shank

Ring-shank nails have circumferential rings on the shaft that grip the timber as the nail is driven. The result: pull-out resistance roughly 3-4× greater than equivalent smooth-shank nails, and significantly better resistance to movement under cyclic loading (wind, structural movement, vibration).

For permanent structural connections in timber frame — wall ties, restraint straps, sheathing — ring-shank is the trade-standard specification. Smooth-shank is acceptable only for non-critical, non-load-bearing temporary fixings.

Why Stainless Steel

External and exposed timber-frame applications demand stainless steel fixings to prevent corrosion staining and long-term loss of fixing strength. Galvanised carbon steel is acceptable for fully internal applications, but for any fixing on the external face — including breather membrane fixings, sheathing nails on cassette walls, and any tie-to-stud connection in cavity wall construction — stainless is the right specification.

Common Applications

  • Fixing timber-frame wall ties into stud faces
  • Securing breather membrane to studs at edges and laps
  • Sheathing nail-down to studs in factory-cassette and stick-built timber frame
  • Battening attachment for rainscreen and tile-hanging applications
  • General-purpose secondary fixings in timber-frame construction
